Description

This set covers both steps of an episiotomy: the incision and the repair. The Braun-Stadler scissors have blades angled to the side, so the cut can be made away from the midline. The lower blade has a blunt tip to protect the tissue beneath.

For the repair, the set has a Mayo-Hegar needle holder, tissue forceps with 1×2 teeth, and two curved mosquito forceps for small bleeders. Operating scissors cut the sutures. A scalpel handle (No. 4) and a double-ended probe are included, and the Foerster sponge forceps holds swabs. The contents follow the episiotomy sets listed by the Red Cross and UNICEF and by Pakistani instrument makers.

Supplied non-sterile: clean and sterilise before use. Blades for the No. 4 handle are not included.

Care and use

Before first use

The instruments are supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilise them before first use, then check each one: tips meet, scissor blades close smoothly, and ratchets hold and release smoothly.

Cleaning

Clean each instrument as soon as possible after use so nothing dries on. Use a neutral (pH 7) instrument detergent with joints and jaws open; an ultrasonic cleaner reaches joints and ratchets best. Rinse well, ideally in distilled water, and dry completely.

Lubricating and sterilising

Before sterilising, treat the joint with a water-soluble instrument lubricant. Sterilise it with the ratchet unlocked and the jaws open, following your steriliser's instructions and your facility's process: instruments locked shut can crack at the joint.

What to avoid

Saline, bleach and other chloride solutions cause pitting and corrosion in stainless steel. Don't soak or rinse the instrument in them, and keep it apart from instruments made of other metals during cleaning.
