Description

This kit puts the five instruments of a basic suture tray together in one order: a Mayo-Hegar needle holder to drive the needle, toothed tissue forceps to hold the skin edge, iris scissors for fine cuts, Littauer stitch scissors to lift and cut sutures, and a curved Halsted mosquito forceps for small vessels and holding suture ends.

Each instrument is the same as the one sold on its own page. Bought as a kit, the five cost less than ordering each instrument on its own.

Supplied non-sterile: clean and sterilise every instrument before use. Suture material, needles and practice pads are not included.

Care and use

Before first use

The instruments are supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilise them before first use, then check each one: tips meet, scissor blades close smoothly, and ratchets hold and release smoothly.

Cleaning

Clean each instrument as soon as possible after use so nothing dries on. Use a neutral (pH 7) instrument detergent with joints and jaws open; an ultrasonic cleaner reaches joints and ratchets best. Rinse well, ideally in distilled water, and dry completely.

Lubricating and sterilising

Before sterilising, treat the joint with a water-soluble instrument lubricant. Sterilise it with the ratchet unlocked and the jaws open, following your steriliser's instructions and your facility's process: instruments locked shut can crack at the joint.

What to avoid

Saline, bleach and other chloride solutions cause pitting and corrosion in stainless steel. Don't soak or rinse the instrument in them, and keep it apart from instruments made of other metals during cleaning.
