Description

This is a full theatre set for abdominal hysterectomy. It covers opening and exposure, clamping the uterine pedicles, suturing and closure, so the tray can be made up from one order.

Six Heaney clamps hold the pedicles: four curved Heaney-Ballantine and two straight Heaney-Rezek. Rochester-Péan, Kocher, Kelly and mosquito forceps take vessels and tissue. A Balfour self-retaining retractor holds the abdomen open, and two Deaver and two Richardson retractors give extra exposure. Mayo and Metzenbaum scissors, Allis and Babcock forceps, a Mixter right-angle forceps, Mayo-Hegar and Heaney needle holders, six Backhaus towel clamps, sponge forceps and a Yankauer suction tube complete it.

The contents are the core items shared by the hysterectomy sets of several instrument makers. Many of the pieces are also sold on their own in our shop. Supplied non-sterile: clean and sterilise before use. Scalpel blades are not included.

Care and use

Before first use

The instruments are supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilise them before first use, then check each one: tips meet, scissor blades close smoothly, and ratchets hold and release smoothly.

Cleaning

Clean each instrument as soon as possible after use so nothing dries on. Use a neutral (pH 7) instrument detergent with joints and jaws open; an ultrasonic cleaner reaches joints and ratchets best. Rinse well, ideally in distilled water, and dry completely.

Lubricating and sterilising

Before sterilising, treat the joint with a water-soluble instrument lubricant. Sterilise it with the ratchet unlocked and the jaws open, following your steriliser's instructions and your facility's process: instruments locked shut can crack at the joint.

What to avoid

Saline, bleach and other chloride solutions cause pitting and corrosion in stainless steel. Don't soak or rinse the instrument in them, and keep it apart from instruments made of other metals during cleaning.
