About Surgical Needle Holders

Match the jaw to the needle. Fine, narrow jaws (1 mm or less) or a diamond-dust surface suit small needles and fine sutures; heavier serrated jaws suit larger needles. Mayo-Hegar and Crile-Wood are standard ring-handled patterns, and Derf holders are short. Castroviejo and micro holders have round spring handles that are rolled between the fingers. Needle holders with scissors have a cutting edge behind the jaws to cut the suture. Needle holders have shorter, stronger jaws than artery forceps, and the two are not interchangeable.
