Description
The Rochester-Carmalt forceps is a large clamp for heavy tissue and large vessels, such as a tissue pedicle. Its jaws carry serrations that run lengthwise, with crosswise serrations at the tip for a firmer hold at the end.
Choose straight or curved jaws. For crosswise serrations along the whole jaw, see the Rochester-Péan forceps; with 1×2 teeth, the Kocher (Rochester-Ochsner) forceps.
A ratchet between the finger rings keeps the jaws closed until you release it. It is supplied non-sterile: clean and sterilise it before use.

Care and use
Before first use
It is supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilise it before first use, then check that the jaw tips meet and that the ratchet holds and releases smoothly.
Cleaning
Clean it as soon as possible after use so nothing dries on. Use a neutral (pH 7) instrument detergent with the jaws open; an ultrasonic cleaner reaches the joint and ratchet best. Rinse well, ideally in distilled water, and dry completely.
Lubricating and sterilising
Before sterilising, treat the joint with a water-soluble instrument lubricant. Sterilise it with the ratchet unlocked and the jaws open, following your steriliser's instructions and your facility's process: instruments locked shut can crack at the joint.
What to avoid
Saline, bleach and other chloride solutions cause pitting and corrosion in stainless steel. Don't soak or rinse the instrument in them, and keep it apart from instruments made of other metals during cleaning.
