Description
The Deaver is a hand-held retractor with a wide, smooth blade that curves back on itself like a question mark. The curve hooks over the edge of the wound and holds back organs or the abdominal wall in deep abdominal and chest surgery, with no teeth or prongs to catch soft tissue.
Choose the blade width: 25 mm (33 cm long, or a shorter 23 cm), 38 mm (30 cm), 50 mm (31 cm) or 75 mm (31.5 cm). Narrow blades fit tight spaces; wide ones hold back more tissue. For a shorter retractor with a right-angled blade, see the Richardson retractor.

Care and use
Before first use
It is supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilise it before first use, then check that the tips meet evenly when you close it.
Cleaning
Clean it as soon as possible after use so nothing dries on. Use a neutral (pH 7) instrument detergent and a soft brush on the tips and serrations. Rinse well, ideally in distilled water, and dry completely.
What to avoid
Saline, bleach and other chloride solutions cause pitting and corrosion in stainless steel. Don't soak or rinse the instrument in them, and keep it apart from instruments made of other metals during cleaning.
