Description
The Olsen-Hegar is a needle holder with a pair of scissors built in behind the jaws. You hold and drive the needle with the tips, then cut the suture with the same instrument, without reaching for separate scissors. It is popular for skin closure and minor procedures, where it saves a change of instrument.
Choose plain serrated jaws, or jaws with tungsten carbide inserts: a harder material than stainless steel, set into the jaw faces with a fine cross-hatched grip. Gold-coloured finger rings mark the tungsten carbide version. Both come in 12, 14, 16 or 18 cm. Hold the suture with the tips only: the cutting edges sit just behind them. Without scissors, see the Mayo-Hegar needle holder.
A ratchet between the finger rings keeps the jaws closed on the needle until you release it. After use, clean the jaws and the cutting edges with a soft brush. Supplied non-sterile: clean and sterilise before use.

Care and use
Before first use
It is supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilise it before first use, then check that the jaw tips meet and that the ratchet holds and releases smoothly.
Cleaning
Clean it as soon as possible after use so nothing dries on. Use a neutral (pH 7) instrument detergent with the jaws open; an ultrasonic cleaner reaches the joint and ratchet best. Rinse well, ideally in distilled water, and dry completely.
Lubricating and sterilising
Before sterilising, treat the joint with a water-soluble instrument lubricant. Sterilise it with the ratchet unlocked and the jaws open, following your steriliser's instructions and your facility's process: instruments locked shut can crack at the joint.
What to avoid
Saline, bleach and other chloride solutions cause pitting and corrosion in stainless steel. Don't soak or rinse the instrument in them, and keep it apart from instruments made of other metals during cleaning.
