The Yankauer is the default suction instrument in open general, orthopaedic, gynaecological and thoracic surgery. The large opening at the tip draws fluid at the volumes an open surgical field produces, while the atraumatic side eyes prevent tissue from being sucked into and plugging the bore — a problem that smaller suction tips experience constantly in a bloody field.
This is the reusable stainless-steel version. At 30 cm it reaches comfortably into an open abdominal or thoracic cavity from the drape edge. The smooth exterior wipes clean of adherent material between passes and withstands indefinite autoclave cycling without degradation.
