A utility forceps is chosen when the surgeon does not know in advance what will need holding. 2×3 teeth are the reason this one works that way: five interlocking points hold firmly enough for dense tissue while spreading the load enough that softer tissue is not torn. A 1×2 would grip the dense and damage the soft; a fine multi-row array would spare the soft and slip on the dense.
140 mm places it in the middle of the working range, reaching a moderately deep field with the hand outside it. The flat handle suits an instrument that is picked up and put down repeatedly — it sits in one orientation without rolling, so the surgeon grasps it the same way each time without looking, which is most of what makes an instrument feel reliable in practice.
