Description
The Volkmann is a hand-held rake retractor: a row of curved prongs at the end of a long handle. The prongs hook under the wound edge and hold back skin, fat and muscle in orthopaedic and general surgery.
Choose 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 prongs. A single prong works like a hook in a small opening; more prongs spread the pull along a longer wound edge. Sharp prongs hold tough tissue firmly; blunt prongs are safer near vessels and nerves. It is 22 cm long. To keep a wound open without holding it, see the Weitlaner self-retaining retractor.
Protect the prong tips during cleaning and storage. Supplied non-sterile: clean and sterilise before use.

Care and use
Before first use
It is supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilise it before first use, then check that the tips meet evenly when you close it.
Cleaning
Clean it as soon as possible after use so nothing dries on. Use a neutral (pH 7) instrument detergent and a soft brush on the tips and serrations. Rinse well, ideally in distilled water, and dry completely.
What to avoid
Saline, bleach and other chloride solutions cause pitting and corrosion in stainless steel. Don't soak or rinse the instrument in them, and keep it apart from instruments made of other metals during cleaning.
