A malleable shaft turns one instrument into many. Breast pockets are approached from the axilla, the fold or the areola, and each route meets the pocket at a different angle — normally requiring a differently shaped dissector for each. A shaft that holds whatever bend it is given lets the surgeon set the angulation for the case in hand, and reset it if the approach changes mid-procedure.
The hockey-stick tip is what that adjustable shaft delivers to the tissue. Its angled head reaches around the curve of the chest wall to the pocket margins that a straight-line instrument passes by, and the symmetric elliptical tapered edge presents the same profile whichever way the blade is turned — so a shaft bent to an unusual angle still cuts a predictable path. At 216 mm of working length the instrument covers a submammary or subpectoral pocket without the excess shaft that would make a bent instrument unwieldy.
