The value of a marked grid is repeatability. A graft cut by eye is accurate only to the surgeon’s judgement in that moment; a graft cut against a millimetre scale can be matched to its opposite number, matched to a measurement taken from the nose, and reproduced identically at a later revision. In paired work — bilateral spreader grafts, symmetric alar battens — a difference of a millimetre between sides is visible in the result.
Because the grid photographs cleanly, it also acts as a scale bar in the operative record. A photograph of a graft on a plain towel records its shape but not its size; the same graft on a marked grid records both, which is what makes the record useful for teaching, for audit and for planning a revision years later. The aluminium plate is light enough to handle one-handed and doubles as the cutting surface itself.
