Every other forceps in this range grips along a line — two straight jaws meeting face to face. The Russian pattern grips around a circle. Teeth set around the rim of a broad rounded head engage tissue from all sides at once, so a fold caught in the head is held from every direction rather than pinched between two edges. Tissue cannot slide sideways out of a circular grip the way it slides out of a straight one.
That makes it the instrument for dense tissue under real traction — fascia during closure, a graft being positioned, anything that has to be pulled rather than merely steadied. The wide head spreads that pull across a large area, so a firm hold does not concentrate into the crush a narrow jaw would apply. It is a workhorse pattern rather than a delicate one, and the rounded profile is why it manages both.
