The Obwegeser Nasal Septum Cutter is built for the septal work that accompanies maxillofacial osteotomy — Le Fort procedures, septal repositioning after midface advancement — rather than for isolated rhinoplasty. It cuts and holds in one action, so a section of septum can be divided and controlled without the surgeon exchanging instruments mid-manoeuvre.
The perforated jaw serves two purposes. Perforations break up the flat contact surface, which increases grip on wet cartilage in the same way tread does on a tyre. They also remove metal from the jaw, reducing tip weight and improving the instrument’s balance at 18.5 cm overall length — a heavy tip at that distance tires the hand and dulls control.
