A tapered blade matches the shape of the space it sits in. An alveolar exposure is narrow where the instrument enters and opens out at depth, so a parallel blade either fits the entry and leaves the deep part unsupported, or fits the depth and has to be forced through the entry. Running from 13.5 mm to 23 mm lets one blade hold both.
70 mm of blade length is what reaches the working area in an intraoral approach, where the instrument enters through the lip and the bone sits well behind it. At 22 cm overall the handle stays outside the mouth entirely — essential when a drill, an elevator and a suction are all coming in through the same opening.
