A fibre head is chosen for what it does not do. Metal striking metal deforms both faces over time: the osteotome head mushrooms and burrs, and those burrs are sharp, catch gloves and eventually have to be dressed off or the instrument retired. The Novotex fibre face is softer than the instrument it strikes, so it absorbs that wear itself rather than transferring it — the mallet is the consumable, not the osteotome.
It is also quieter and less percussive through the tissue. A fibre head spreads the contact over a fractionally longer interval than a steel face does, softening the peak of the impulse while still transmitting the total energy, which is preferred where a hard ringing strike is unwelcome. At 150 g on a 26 cm handle the mallet is light with a long reach, and the 35 mm face gives a broad target on the striking end of a chisel.
