A needle forceps has to hold two things that behave nothing alike. Tissue is soft and yields, so it is held by teeth that interlock through it. A needle is hardened steel with a polished curved body — nothing interlocks with that, so it is held by surface texture pressed against it. Putting delicate 1×2 teeth at the tip and carbide serrations behind them lets one instrument do both.
Precision milling is what makes the serrated half work. The serrations grip a needle only if the two jaws meet in exact register; a fraction out of alignment and the ridges sit shoulder to shoulder instead of interlocking, and the needle rotates under the first bit of resistance. At 15 cm the forceps sit in the common working range — enough reach for a moderately deep closure with the hand at the wound edge.
