Length on a marker is chosen against the line being drawn, not for reach. A long instrument lays a continuous sweep along a jawline; a short one is controlled from the fingers, which is what detail marking at the extremities of a facelift incision needs — the temporal hairline, around the ear, the short curves where the line changes direction within a centimetre or two.
At 14.5 cm the whole instrument sits in the hand with no shaft acting as a lever, so a small finger movement produces a small movement at the tip. That is the opposite requirement from the 32 cm abdominal demarcator, and the reason both exist rather than one long marker covering everything. Symmetry between the two sides of the face depends on these short segments matching, since they are the parts the eye compares.
