Channel width has to match the bone it sits on. An 8 mm channel grips a thinner mandibular border securely, where a wider channel would sit loose over the same bone and rock — which defeats the purpose, since the whole point of a channel is that the retractor is held by the bone rather than by hand pressure. Where the border is slender, the narrower channel is the one that actually locks on.
At 17 cm this is also the shortest of the family, suited to anterior mandibular work where the bone lies close beneath the incision. A retractor that is longer than the approach requires is not neutral: it projects out of the wound and collides with the drill, the elevator and the assistant’s hands throughout the procedure. Matching the length to the depth keeps the field clear.
