32 cm exists because an abdominal flap is drawn across a distance no facial marker could span. The excision line runs from hip to hip, and marking it in segments introduces a join at every stop — each one a place where the line can step or the curve can break. A single instrument long enough to lay the whole line in one pass removes those joins.
Continuity matters more here than on smaller markings because the line is what gets cut, and an abdominoplasty scar is long, visible and permanent. A step of a millimetre in the marking becomes a visible irregularity in a scar that the patient will see for the rest of their life. The demarcator also has to be laid against a curved abdominal surface without flexing, which is why the length comes in rigid steel rather than anything lighter.
