A skin hook is useless once its point rounds off, and on a one-piece instrument that means retiring a perfectly good handle along with it. Making the hook detachable separates the two: the part that wears is a small replaceable component, and the handle — which never touches tissue and never dulls — stays in service. Over the life of a set that is a meaningful difference in running cost.
The same fitting also lets one handle carry different hooks, so the size of the tip can be matched to the tissue without holding several complete instruments. The detachable joint has to be secure enough that the hook cannot loosen under traction, since a tip separating inside a wound is a retained-item problem rather than an inconvenience — which is why the fitting is machined rather than sprung. At 15 cm the hook suits microsurgical and reconstructive work.
