Point fineness is what separates a facial hook from a general one. A general hook is built to hold fascia and bulk tissue and has a point to match; used on facial skin the same point leaves a visible entry mark in tissue that will be inspected closely for the rest of the patient’s life. The Joseph pattern is ground finer, so it engages with almost no pressure and the puncture closes without trace.
A single prong gives the most precise control available. It engages at exactly one chosen point, so the surgeon governs not only how hard the skin is pulled but precisely from where — which is what allows one part of a wound edge to be lifted without disturbing tissue a few millimetres away. J2 stainless matters on an instrument whose whole function depends on the tip: a point that rounds off through repeated sterilisation has to be pushed rather than placed, and that is when marks appear.
