Length is what distinguishes hooks of this type from one another, and 16.5 cm sits deliberately in the middle. The 12 to 14 cm hooks are finger-held for work at the surface; the 20 cm patterns reach the bottom of a deeper wound. At 16.5 cm the instrument covers the large middle ground — deep enough that the hand is not in the field, short enough that the tip still tracks the fingers closely.
A single prong is the simplest form of retraction and remains the most precise. It engages at exactly one chosen point, so the surgeon controls not just how hard the tissue is pulled but precisely where from — which is what allows a wound edge to be opened in one direction without disturbing the tissue a few millimetres away. The sharp point is what makes that possible on a smooth tissue surface, where a blunt hook would simply slide.
