Most instruments in this category do one job — a caliper measures, a template marks a fixed shape. The Halpern combines both, which matters because augmentation planning is a set of related measurements rather than a single outline: the inframammary fold position, the distance from sternal notch to nipple, the base width of the pocket. Each one informs the next, and each has to be identical on the two sides.
Taking those measurements and transferring them with the same instrument removes the step where error enters — reading a distance off one tool and then reproducing it with another. Because the plan drawn on the chest is what the whole operation follows, and because the two sides are compared directly in the result, a difference of a few millimetres between them is visible in a way that an absolute error of the same size is not.
