The Greven Wire Closing Forceps performs one specific step in stapes surgery: crimping the wire loop of a piston prosthesis onto the long process of the incus. The 0.8 × 5.0 mm jaws close in parallel rather than converging at a point, which distributes the crimping force along the full length of the wire loop. An uneven crimp either leaves the prosthesis loose, causing conductive failure, or over-tightens it and risks incus necrosis — both are why this task has a dedicated instrument.
At 8 cm overall length the forceps operates at the standard middle-ear microsurgical working distance under the operating microscope.
