Bowel is the tissue least tolerant of a crushing grip. Compressed bowel wall may look intact at the time and still fail days later at the anastomosis — the one complication that turns a routine resection into a serious problem. So the grip has to come from serration geometry rather than from closing force, which is why this pattern offers two serration types rather than one.

Vertical parallel serrations run across the direction of pull, resisting the bowel sliding lengthways out of the jaws. Horizontal double rows grip along a broader front, holding a wider band of wall with less pressure at any point. Which suits depends on how the bowel is being handled — drawn along its length, or held steady while it is sutured. Multiple tip sizes then match the jaw to the calibre of the bowel, since a jaw wider than the segment grips its edges only.
