This pattern carries teeth and serrations for two different targets. The 1×2 teeth interlock through tissue — the secure hold needed to keep a wound edge steady while a needle passes. The pyramid-milled carbide serrations behind them grip the needle itself, which is smooth hardened steel and slides out of anything softer or less aggressively textured.
Alignment is what makes the serrations work. Pyramid teeth grip by meeting point to point, so the two jaws must close in exact register; a fraction out of line and the pyramids sit shoulder to shoulder, halving the grip. That precision is why they are milled rather than stamped. The wide thumb grip spreads the closing force across more of the hand, which matters on an instrument squeezed hard and often through a long closure.
