108 mm is short for a retractor, and facelift work is why. The dissection runs immediately beneath the skin across the side of the face — a broad plane but a shallow one, only millimetres deep. Reach counts for nothing here; what counts is control of a blade held close to skin that will be visible for the rest of the patient’s life. A short instrument is held in the fingers, and the tip goes exactly where the fingers put it.
The finish carries as much weight as the dimensions on an instrument like this. The blade bears on the underside of a thin skin flap under continuous tension, and any roughness or defined edge marks tissue that has no thickness to absorb it. Polished stainless steel spreads that pressure and releases cleanly, which is what allows the same flap to be repositioned repeatedly through a long procedure without cumulative bruising.
