The Doyen is the mallet most general sets standardise on, and 200 g at 20 cm is why. It sits in the middle of the usable range: heavy enough that an osteotome advances on a reasonable number of strikes, light enough that a mis-aimed blow does not carry the bone further than intended. Sets carry one mallet far more often than three, and this is the weight that covers the widest span of work when only one is on the tray.
Its use is bone shaping and osteotomy rather than impaction — cutting a controlled line through bone with a chisel or osteotome, where the operator wants the same energy delivered on every strike so the cut advances evenly. The solid head gives that repeatability, returning an identical impulse each time and transmitting the change in resistance as the osteotome passes through the cortex.
