This elevator solves the same problem as the temporal-approach instruments but from the opposite direction. Its curved shaft is shaped to travel up from an incision in the buccal sulcus, behind the maxilla, and around to sit beneath the arch — an approach that reaches the fracture entirely through the mouth and leaves no external incision at all. A straight shaft simply cannot follow that path.
The narrow 5.5 mm blade follows from the route rather than the task. The intraoral corridor behind the maxilla is a tight tunnel through soft tissue, and the blade has to pass along it without being forced; a wider blade would need a larger incision and more retraction to admit it. Once in position the curve also converts the surgeon’s pull into an upward lift at the tip, which is what repositions the arch — the force is applied at an angle the hand could not otherwise reach.
