The interesting thing about this elevator is how close its two ends are in size. 5.8 mm and 6.7 mm are barely different, and that is deliberate: the blade should match the width of the strip being lifted almost exactly. A blade narrower than the strip lifts it in overlapping passes and leaves ridges in the periosteum; a blade wider than the working space catches at the edges and tears the layer at its margins. Two widths within a millimetre of each other let the surgeon match the tissue rather than settle for the nearest available size.
The rounded handle supports the same precision. Periosteal elevation is done by pushing steadily along bone, and a handle that lets the instrument roll between the fingers allows the blade angle to be adjusted continuously as the contour of the bone changes. At 18.5 cm the elevator suits the working distances of plastic and ENT procedures, where the exposure is shallow and control matters more than reach.
