A ligature carrier is not a needle in the sewing sense — it does not stitch, it delivers. The suture is threaded at the tip, the instrument is passed around a vessel or pedicle, and the suture is picked up on the far side and tied. That lets a ligature be placed around a structure the surgeon cannot get a finger or a needle holder behind, which is the whole difficulty in deep and lateral work.
The angle and curvature of the tip determine what it can reach around. A Deschamps is bent so the tip travels in an arc that comes back toward the operator, so it passes behind a pedicle and re-emerges rather than continuing away into tissue. The choice between a sharp and a blunt tip is a choice about what lies beyond: sharp passes through fibrous tissue that will not part, blunt pushes past structures rather than piercing them where vessels are close. At 23 cm the instrument reaches deep pelvic and vaginal fields with the hand outside.
