The Collin-Lucae is made as one piece of metal, head and handle together, and that construction is the reason it endures in sets that are reprocessed daily. Mallets with a separate handle have a join, and a join under repeated impact eventually works loose — a mallet with any play in the head delivers an inconsistent, partly absorbed blow and becomes a housekeeping problem long before it fails outright. There is no join here to loosen and no seam to trap tissue or detergent.
21 cm is a mid-length handle, which places this between the short mallets used for delicate incremental work and the long-handled patterns used for heavy orthopaedic driving. It is a working length for craniofacial and otologic work, where the surgeon needs enough reach to strike squarely into a deep field but not the swing arc of a full orthopaedic mallet.
