An S-shaped shank does something a straight or single-curved retractor cannot: it steps the blade sideways from the handle axis while keeping the blade face parallel to the tissue. The handle then sits to one side of the opening rather than directly over it, which leaves the surgeon’s view and working corridor clear. On a straight retractor the hand holding it is always somewhere above the thing it is exposing.
The two ends differ substantially — 52 × 33 mm against 30 × 21 mm — so the same instrument covers both a broad opening and a confined one. Reversing it changes the scale of retraction without introducing a second instrument into a field that may already hold several. At 16 cm the retractor stays in the shallow-to-moderate depth range where its offset geometry is most useful.
