A caliper only reads correctly when both tips sit flat on the points being measured. In a deep or confined maxillofacial exposure, a straight tip often cannot be brought square to the bone — the surrounding tissue or the angle of approach forces it onto a corner, and the reading is taken across a tilt rather than between two landmarks. Angling the tips restores that square contact where the geometry of the field would otherwise prevent it.
The trade against the straight version is visibility: an angled tip is slightly harder to see onto its landmark. So the two exist as a pair rather than as better and worse — straight where the surgeon can see and reach directly, angled where the measurement has to be taken around something. Both keep the 18 cm length that puts the scale outside the wound while the tips work at depth.
