Doubling the measuring range to 40 mm is what this version is for, and the extra 2 cm of body is a consequence rather than the point. Plastic and reconstructive work deals in distances that routinely exceed 20 mm — flap dimensions, graft lengths, the spacing between two marked points — and a caliper that runs out of range partway through a measurement is simply the wrong instrument.
The trade against the 20 mm version is readability. Fitting 40 mm of scale into a comparable space means finer graduations, which are marginally harder to read at a glance. Where every measurement is under 20 mm the shorter caliper remains the better tool; where they are not, range wins. The 9 cm body still keeps the instrument short enough to control from the fingers.
