The Bonney is the heavy end of the tissue forceps range, made for material that defeats finer instruments — thick fascia, dense scar, a heavy needle that has to be repositioned mid-pass. A 1×2 tooth configuration interlocks rather than merely meeting, so the tissue is held between opposing points and cannot rotate or pull free under the force this work involves.
Milling the pyramid teeth onto the tungsten carbide insert rather than onto the steel behind it is the detail that determines working life. Teeth are the first thing to round off on a heavy forceps, and once they do the grip becomes a pinch and the instrument is finished for its purpose even though it looks intact. Carbide holds the tooth geometry through years of that loading, which is why the pattern is specified this way rather than in plain steel.
