The nasal cavity runs at its own angle to the face, and a straight retractor introduced along the surgeon’s natural line of approach meets the sidewall instead of the depth. Angling the working end downward lets the blade follow the cavity while the handle stays raised — so the surgeon looks along the corridor rather than into the back of their own hand.
That geometry matters most in rhinoplasty and septoplasty, where the work happens several centimetres in through an opening a finger wide. At 17 cm the retractor reaches that depth with the hand outside the nostril. A finely finished surface is not cosmetic here: the blade bears against nasal mucosa for the length of the procedure, and any roughness abrades tissue that is already being handled repeatedly.
