The alar cartilage is a convex dome, and the blade curvature here is matched to it. Curved blades let the scissors travel along that convexity while staying in the plane between the cartilage and the superficial fascia above it — a straight blade approaching the same surface either lifts away from the cartilage or cuts into it, because the tissue plane is not flat.
Blade length is deliberately short at 12 cm overall. Trimming at the nasal tip is measured in millimetres, and a long blade converts a small hand movement into a large excursion at the tip; a short blade keeps the cutting edge under direct control and both tips visible in a field where the surgeon is working through a limited opening.
