Suturing two pieces of cartilage together is a two-handed problem solved with one pair of hands. The layers have to stay in exact register while the needle passes, and cartilage is stiff and slippery enough that finger pressure at one end lets the other end rotate. These forceps clamp the stack along its length and hold that alignment independently, so both of the surgeon’s hands are free for needle and forceps.
The 5 mm tip width is what makes the hold stable rather than pivoting. A narrow point grips at effectively one spot and the graft can still swing around it; a 5 mm face contacts a broad enough footprint to fix the graft’s angle as well as its position. That width also spreads the clamping load, which matters when the same grip has to be maintained through several minutes of suturing without leaving crush marks in a graft that will sit under the skin.
