Titanium changes three things about the same instrument. It weighs around half what stainless does, so the hand carries less through a long procedure and fine control lasts further into it. It is non-magnetic, which matters wherever the instrument may be near an imaging field or a magnet-sensitive device. And it does not reflect light the way polished steel does, so it throws no glare back into the surgeon’s eyes under operating lamps or a microscope.
The trade is hardness. Titanium is not as hard as hardened stainless, so the tips will not hold an edge or a fine tooth profile under heavy loading the way a steel or carbide instrument does — which is why titanium is chosen for delicate handling rather than for gripping needles and dense fascia. Within that role it is more corrosion-resistant than steel and comes through repeated sterilisation unchanged.
