Adson Tissue Forceps – Tungsten Carbide, 1×2 Teeth

Teeth and a serrated platform do different jobs, and this pattern carries both. The 1×2 teeth at the very tip interlock through tissue, which is the only reliable way to hold a wound edge under traction. The serrated platform behind them grips flat material — a suture, a needle, a fold of gauze — by friction across a face. The surgeon chooses which by how far back in the jaw the material is placed.

Tungsten carbide is what keeps both surfaces working. Teeth round off and serrations flatten, and on a general-purpose forceps used many times a day that happens within a couple of years in plain steel — at which point the teeth pinch instead of interlocking and the platform slides instead of gripping. Carbide inserts hold both geometries far longer, which is the case for the higher initial cost on an instrument that earns its keep by being picked up constantly.
