Picking something up off a flat surface is harder with a straight forceps than it looks. To get the points down onto the material, the whole instrument has to be tilted almost vertical — which puts the surgeon’s hand over the item and closes off the view at the moment of grasping. Angling the last few millimetres of the tips lets the points lie flat while the shafts stay up at a comfortable working angle.
That geometry suits the ordinary, constant work these forceps do: lifting a suture end off the drape, picking up gauze, taking hold of a flap edge lying against the tissue beneath it. In each case the thing being grasped is flat against something else, and the tips have to get under or onto it without the instrument fouling its own approach. At 12.1 cm the forceps stay finger-controlled.
