Carbide matters most where the tip is smallest. A broad steel jaw can lose a little of its surface and still work; a fine tip has almost no material to spare, so wear changes its geometry quickly and the instrument stops meeting precisely at the point. Tungsten carbide inserts keep a fine tip closing accurately through years of reprocessing.
That accuracy is what the instrument is for. Handling a fine suture or repositioning a small needle depends on the two tips meeting exactly — a gap of a fraction of a millimetre means the suture is pinched at one edge rather than held between faces, and it slips at the moment tension is applied. The Adson body gives the surgeon’s hand a broad comfortable grip that tapers to that fine point, which is why the pattern suits work done for long periods.
