The scale on these forceps removes a step that costs accuracy. Measuring a graft normally means setting it down, picking up a ruler and laying the two together — and cartilage that has been released springs slightly and reads shorter or longer than it does under the tension it will actually sit at. With increments marked from the tip at 2 cm intervals, the measurement is taken while the graft is held in position, in the state it will be implanted in.
Brown-type teeth make that possible without crushing. They are multiple fine rows rather than a single coarse pair, so grip is distributed across a wider footprint and the holding force needed at any one point stays low — cartilage is held firmly enough to measure and position without the tooth marks that a heavier serration leaves in a graft destined to sit under thin skin. The 12 cm length suits work at the nasal tip and dorsum.
