Fenestrating the handle does more than save weight. Metal removed from the rear of the instrument shifts its balance point toward the tips, and a forward-balanced forceps sits differently in the hand — the fingers feel what is happening at the jaws rather than supporting a weight behind them. On a multi-toothed pattern where the surgeon is judging how firmly delicate tissue is held, that feedback is the point.
The lighter arms also close with less finger pressure, which suits an instrument that may be held shut for long stretches. Fine 7×7 teeth do not need force to grip — they grip by having many points — so a softer spring gives the surgeon finer control over how much is applied rather than making the instrument weaker at its job.
