The Gruenwald Ear Forceps, widely catalogued under the Lucae name, uses a bayonet-style offset shaft so the handle sits away from the axis of view into the ear canal. This matters in clinic work performed with a headlight rather than a microscope: a straight forceps places the surgeon’s fingers directly in the light path, while the bayonet offset clears it.
At 14.5 cm the instrument sits in the outpatient working range, long enough to keep the hand clear of the patient’s head. The serrated jaws grip gauze, wicks and small foreign bodies without tearing dressing material.
