The Schuknecht Suction Tube carries a 45° tip angle on a 7.5 cm shaft — both dimensions are optimised for work at the operating microscope. The angle lets the suction opening face downward into a pooling fluid collection while the shaft stays above the field, where it does not block the microscope’s line of sight. A straight tube of the same length would place the shaft directly across the view every time the surgeon moved it to a new position.
Finger control is via an open vent on the shaft: occlude fully for maximum vacuum, lift progressively for reduced or zero suction. Multiple diameters are available for different fluid volumes.
