The defining feature of the Walsham Septum Straightening Forceps is that its jaws are built not to close against each other. A normal forceps meets at the tips; the Walsham stops short, leaving a controlled gap. That gap is the design: the septum and its mucoperichondrium sit between two concave faces which apply corrective bending force across a broad area, without crushing the tissue at a line of contact.
The 32 × 7 mm jaw spreads that force along the length of the deviation rather than at one point. Left and right narrow patterns exist because a septal deviation is asymmetric — the surgeon selects the pattern that presents the concavity to the convex side of the deflection. The slender profile keeps the operative view open in a nostril already occupied by the instrument shaft.
