About Nasal and Cartilage Knives

Nasal knives have a small fixed blade on a long, slim handle. Cottle and Freer knives incise the septal mucosa; the Joseph button-end knife has a blunt tip for separating mucosa from cartilage, and the double-edged Joseph knife cuts in both directions. Ballenger swivel knives cut a strip of septal cartilage, and Maltz and Masing knives shape cartilage grafts, the Maltz with a blade guard. Lengths run from 13 to 19 cm. Handles for exchangeable blades are under Scalpel Handles and Knives.
